There are many components combined within us that make us who we are. There are biological (DNA), psychological, and environmental factors, to name a few. Yet, each of us is wired differently and we act and react differently to both positive and negative events.
On this episode, we look at the adverse experiences in childhood and how this affects us over our lifetime. It is well known that stress and trauma can be the root cause of a number of lifelong issues that surface throughout life. Most often, we tend to think of the issues isolated to relationship problems and anger driven behavior.
Guest Ronald Chapman and I discuss Adverse Childhood Experiences and the study conducted by the CDC-Kaiser Permanente from 1993-1997. The study was the largest conducted on childhood abuse and neglect and how it correlated with later-life health and well-being. The results were quite shocking, with findings so significant, that health issues once attributed to specific sources needed to be reviewed. For example, those who were evaluated in the study with a certain number of “ACE” points, were found to have health problems from suicide attempts to multiple sexual partners to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease to liver disease. These are only four of the 21 listed health-related issues on the CDC website with an asterisk below them indicating this was not an exhaustive list (About the CDC-Kaiser ACE Study).
We all are exposed to various stresses and traumas throughout our life; however, there is great news! We can change the outcome of “ACE” through awareness and prevention early on in life. There is more great news! There are solutions for those who have been exposed to “ACE”.
This episode will allow you to find out more about “ACE” related health concerns, as well, solutions to them.
