On todays show we discuss the politics of war, the role of the military Industrial Complex in establishing and setting the political stage, and the disastrous ramifications of a torture and assassination policy gone seriously wrong.
Many of us are aware of some of what is about to be revealed, but few of you are truly aware of what went on behind the curtain of secrecy established to hide a great deal of this topic behind a veil of patriotism.
The term “All is fair in Love and War” sounds great when being used in a flippant conversation between us in what may be a tavern or social setting … but in reality nothing could be further from the truth. The Geneva Convention and other international treaties set standards for the treatment of prisoners. So what happens when a nation ruled by elitist politicians, hell bent on victory at any cost, crosses that line and goes what is essentially … rogue?
Where does the buck stop?
How does a local or theater Commander (pressured by high ranking politicians) respond to orders to violate these international treaties?
How do these orders effect the performance of the foot soldier (especially his conscience and ethics) who is ultimately responsible for the execution of these orders in controversial circumstances such as Abu Ghraib?
What influence is wielded by private contractors of the Military Industrial Complex, and what role do they ultimate fill in the execution of these orders from the very top of the chain of command (POTUS)?
There must always be secrets in the conduct of war … the real question that we will attempt to answer here is … How much is enough, and when does politically generated policy cross the line?
All of this and more is discussed on this program with our special guest, General Janis L. Karpinski
Janis Leigh Karpinski is a career officer in the US Army Reserve, now retired. She is notable for having commanded the forces that operated Abu Ghraib and other prisons in Iraq in 2003 and 2004, at the time of the scandal related to torture and prisoner abuse. She commanded three prisons in Iraq, and the forces that ran them. Her education includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and secondary education from Kean College, a Master of Arts degree in aviation management from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and a Master of Arts in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College.
