Whenever I tell the story about the day the lightning bolt of message inspiration hit me, my heart bursts with gratitude for Dr. Alisa Griffis and the important role she played that day.
She’d been my mentor for years, honing my teaching and online mentoring skills while I worked in her business, and had asked me to edit her book in March 2007. Stunned by its power, I asked her over lunch one day what it felt like to have written something that would leave the reader forever-changed. Her fast answer caught me off-guard: “Amanda, it feels great. When are you going to write your book?”
I took a deep breath. “Ummmm…well…” Suddenly, there was a huge amount of pressure in my chest and head. I laughed uncomfortably and tried to jest, “Well, how about I write a book and you put your name and Ph.D. on it?”
Without a moment’s hesitation, she insisted, “Amanda, you have something to give right now. What value do you have to give the world today?”
I didn’t have an answer for her. Suddenly realizing the extent of my disconnection from myself and my purpose, I burst into tears and hopped in my car.
Forty-five minutes later, after asking that question repeatedly through tears on the drive home, I was struck with inspiration AND the knowing that my journey had perfectly prepared me to share it. Because of her powerful question and insistence on acknowledging my value and purpose, the trajectory of my life changed that day.
But I am just one of many people whose lives have been transformed because of an interaction with this brilliant woman.
Dr. Alisa Griffis has worked in education for more than twenty years, teaching children and adults the processes of critical thinking, writing, and connection to others. Motivating others to grow to meet their goals and dreams is one of her favorite areas of her mission. She currently teaches at two universities and evaluates student teacher portfolios and teachers’ work in a Master’s in Education program at Western Governor’s University. Alisa has also written several published books—The Power of Three: Managing Life in a Hectic World, Conundrums – a book that helps parents teach critical thinking to their kids in a fun way, a textbook on ESL Assessment, and a book on teaching the writing process to children in grades 3-6. She’s also written Gonalls, a pre-teen fiction story about a genetically-engineered pet that gets out of a lab and finds a young boy to protect.
In this episode, we explore her genius approach to transforming a high-risk population of children into motivated, successful students. Plus, we talk about her experience as a fiction writer and how she stays mindful when it comes to managing her own creativity.
The gems of insight and wisdom Alisa shares here will help every parent, teacher, manager, speaker, and coach enhance their ability to connect, build trust, and facilitate more powerful learning experiences for their children, students, teams, audiences, and clients.
