Mother of slain teenager, shot at a sleep over party, discusses gun safety and the botched criminal investigation that failed to find her son’s killer.
“Most people buy firearms to keep their family safe,” said Donna L. Wittner, Louisiana native and mother of the slain victim, Brett Taylor Wittner. “So, keep your family safe around firearms.” In February 2012, Brett was a happy, healthy, rambunctious 14-year-old when something went terribly wrong at a sleep over party involving eight children.
Wittner said it was a lack of adult supervision and negligence on the part of the adults in the home that led to the tragic death of her son. “If you have firearms around children, it is your responsibility to keep them safe.” Basic gun safety rules are key, she said.
“Do not leave your gun around teenagers,” she continued. “There’s a lot of bullying and depressed teens who should not have access to guns.” You cannot teach a toddler gun safety, she said, but you can be responsible by separating your guns from your ammo, or keeping your firearms locked in a safe.
It has been 6.5 years since Brett was killed, yet no one has been arrested, no one has been charged in his shooting death, said Wittner. “I will never give up on fighting for justice for my son.”

The Liberty Beacon Project is now expanding at a near exponential rate, and for this we are grateful and excited! But we must also be practical. For 7 years we have not asked for any donations, and have built this project with our own funds as we grew. We are now experiencing ever increasing growing pains due to the large number of websites and projects we represent. So we have just installed donation buttons on our websites and ask that you consider this when you visit them. Nothing is too small. We thank you for all your support and your considerations … TLB
